Uppsala Student Union is, to put it succintly, those 33 000 students who are members in the Student Union, which makes us Sweden’s largest student union. Uppsala Student Union is the collective voice of its members, and it looks out for these students’ interests.
Uppsala Student Union works to improve the conditions of all of its members’ education and student welfare. It also works to prevent discrimination of students. This is done through exerting influence on the University, the Municipality and the State, but also through organising and getting the members involved and thus creating a strong student influence. Uppsala Student Union even supports individuals who have been treated wrongly and safeguards their rights, for example when the University has accused a student of cheating in an examination.
There are a number of ombudsmen who work in the Student Union. The Student Ombudsman and the Equality Ombudsman can be found in the Student Union Buiilding every day between 9 and 17. They can help if you have problems with, for example, your department, CSN or the disciplinary board. The Student Legal Advisors meet every week in the Student Union Building and they can help you find the solutions to your legal problems, for example if you have problems with your landlord.
In the reception you can find computers, fax, telephone and copiers, all of which are available for student use. You can even arrange a personal loan of up to 3000 crowns, read the newspaper, book Norreda Cottage, where there is space for up to 60 guests, and you can even buy and sell course litterature. A couple of times per semester the Student Union arranges a Student Union fika where can can get great food and discuss questions and issues with your student representatives.
On the floor above the reception you are always welcome to grab a cup of coffee and read the papers; you can check out the ERGO editorial staff who work each day to make sure that ERGO comes home to you each week or you can discuss student union politics with the Student Union’s chairperson.
The Student Union is even responsible for the student book store Studentbokandeln, the Student Health Centre (Studenthälsan) and the student gyms Svettis and Stallet.
